Cervical Cancer Awareness

Campaign Meeting with the Minister of Health
Campaign Meeting with the Minister of Health

Awareness and Prevention of cervical cancer.

Description

Nine years ago BPW Cyprus launched its annual Cervical Cancer Prevention Campaign under the banner of «Prevention through Information», knowing that among women, cervical cancer ranks as the second most widespread cause of death from malignant tumours. That is all the more disturbing since these deaths can be prevented through proper and regular screening and monitoring.

Through our awareness campaigns we have to date reached 132 communities, primarily in rural areas, but we have also given lectures at institutes for higher education and private organizations. Our campaign for 2019 will add another 23 communities in the districts of Limassol and Larnaca . Furthermore, since February 2018 we have added the cooperation of the  Medical School of the University of Nicosia, which will enhance and extend our  screening and awareness  program to even more areas.

To date more than  2728 free pap tests have been conducted. The screening programme identified 21 cases of pre-cancerous as well as more advanced lesions, so we are proud to say we contributed to saving 21 lives.

Through our initiative the Ministry of Health now provides HPV vaccines for 12 to 13 year-old girls, but we continue to promote the importance of targeted public screening  to ensure that all women realize the importance of prevention.
